Driving the coastal route:

To reach the Monterey Bay area by vehicle from the north or south, take coastal Highway 1. The drive is slower than the inland freeways, but a great introduction to the scenic beauty of the California coast. The Presidio of Monterey, located about 117 miles south of San Francisco, sits on a hillside overlooking the Monterey Bay, above the coastal cities of Monterey and Pacific Grove.

Driving from the north:

  1. Use Highway 101 South until you reach the Monterey Peninsula/Highway 156 West Exit 336 near Prunedale. Take exit 336 and follow Highway 156 West for 5 miles until it merges into Highway 1 South. At the mouth of the Monterey Bay, Highway 1 South bypasses the small cities of Marina, Seaside, and also the former Fort Ord, now called the Ord Military Community (OMC). See Map

  2. Continue along Highway 1 South until you reach Del Monte Avenue exit number 402B. Merge onto Del Monte Ave via Exit 402B toward Pacific Grove and continue past the Naval Postgraduate School (on your left) and the Municipal Wharf (on your right) until you approach the Fisherman’s Wharf intersection at Del Monte Avenue, Washington Avenue and Lighthouse Avenue. From here there are two ways to reach the installation: (Note: Buses and larger vehicles are encouraged to use the PVT Bolio Road Gate found in direction B.) See Map

    1. Move to the left lane of Del Monte Avenue before reaching the Fisherman’s Wharf intersection. Move into the far left lane continuing on Del Monte Road, passing the Portola Plaza Hotel of Monterey (on your right) until you reach Pacific Street. Turn left on Pacific Street, go one block, then turn right onto Franklin Street. Continue up Franklin Street until you reach the Franklin Street Gate entrance to Presidio of Monterey. See Map

    2. Move to the right lane of Del Monte Avenue before reaching the Fisherman’s Wharf intersection and turn right onto Lighthouse Avenue towards Cannery Row. Go through the tunnel staying in the right lane. Veer right taking the Foam Street exit. At this point there are road signs to help direct to PVT Bolio Gate. Move directly into the left lane of Foam Street. Take the first left turn on to Reeside Avenue. Then take an immediate left again onto Lighthouse Avenue. Move immediately into the right lane of Lighthouse Avenue. Turn right onto PVT. Bolio Road. Follow PVT. Bolio Road until you reach the PVT. Bolio Road Gate to Presidio of Monterey. See Map

Driving from the south:

  1. Use Highway 101 to Salinas.
  2. Follow Highway 68 signs to Monterey Peninsula/Highway 1 to the Pacific Grove City/17-Mile Drive turnoff (Highway 68). Turn right.
  3. Follow Highway 68 to Prescott Avenue. (Safeway store will be on your left). Turn right on Prescott Avenue.
  4. At the first traffic light, turn right on Taylor Street. Within one block’s distance you’ll be entering the Presidio through the Taylor Street Gate.

From the east or southeast:

  1. Use Interstate 5 North.
  2. Follow Interstate 5 to Highway 152 West.
  3. 152 West takes you to Interstate 101 South.
  4. Take Interstate 101 to Highway 156 West.
  5. Travel along Highway 156, which turns into Highway 1 South.
  6. Use the same directions to the Presidio as the alternate route from the north given earlier.
