The Institute offers foreign language instruction in more than two dozen languages to approximately 3,500 students on a schedule that extends throughout the year. Courses are taught six hours per day, five days a week, with the exception of federal holidays and training holidays. Teachers work on teaching teams consisting of six members and teach up to 30 students in groups of 10. The duration of courses range between 25 and 63 weeks, depending on the difficulty of the language.

The Institute currently awards an Associate of Arts degree in foreign language to students who successfully complete the course. The DLIFLC is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community & Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

Qualifications:

An academic rank will be determined on the basis of information contained in the vacancy announcement (see How to Apply below). In addition to the Academic Rank qualifications, applicants must have near native language proficiency in all skills, in addition to strong English skills. Language testing will be required for recommended candidates. A four year accredited university degree is the minimum requirement. Education related to foreign language education, linguistics or MATFL/TESOL etc., is preferred. A masters degree or higher is preferred.

Benefits:

Tenure-track and tenured faculty members are eligible for group health and life insurance, retirement and additional retirement similar to 401K. They may also receive up to 40 hours per year of absence or travel to a foreign country to enhance professional capabilities and classroom performance. Full-time positions also receive: paid federal holidays, paid vacation and sick time, and tuition paid for a Master of Arts in Teaching Foreign Language program, delivered by the Monterey Institute of International Studies (for qualified candidates in the Monterey location only).

Language Evaluation:

The minimum English proficiency is a Level 2 and the minimum proficiency for the language to be taught is a Level 3 in speaking as defined by the Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) Skill-Level descriptions, which are posted in the DLI catalog at www.dliflc.edu or at Government ILR. Recommended applicants only are required to take formal language tests to determine their language proficiency. If you are selected to be tested, you will receive a call from the Testing Division. All language tests are performed telephonically. If you fail any portion of the language tests you will be disqualified from further consideration and your file will be retired. You may reactivate your file after 6 months. Retesting is only allowed once and is at the discretion of the FPS Office.
