s Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center, Dr. Jielu Zhao serves as the Chief Instructional Officer for nine
language schools and the Student Learning Center. Dr. Zhao is responsible for planning, organizing, and operating all the programs of Undergraduate Education to provide
foreign language education and training for DoD personnel.
In the past 25 years, Dr. Zhao has been extensively involved in the field of foreign language education, research, and administration in both American and Chinese higher
education institutions. He has published dozens of articles and authored 4 books. He taught at the Southwest China University, the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State
University, and the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center. Dr. Zhao received a Ph.D in Higher Education Administration from College of Education, Virginia Tech
and an M.A. in English Language and Literature from the Southwest China Normal University.
Since joining the Defense Language Institute in 1995, Dr. Zhao has assumed positions at various levels in different language schools. Before he became the Associate
Provost for Undergraduate Education, Dr. Zhao held positions as Professor of Chinese, Curriculum Development Specialist, OPI Tester, Test Reviewer, Department Chairperson,
President of Academic Council, School Dean, and Dean’s Council Chairperson.
