Faculty Using SmartBoard Technology I n the aftermath of 9/11 the Directorate of Language Science and Technology (LST) rose to the challenge of developing rapid technical and non-technical language solutions for military personnel world-wide.

Supporting the DLIFLC Command Plan, the Vice Chancellor of LST oversees the Curriculum and Faculty Development Divisions, Language Technology Research and Development Division, as well as the Library Learning Resource Centers.

The Faculty and Staff Development Division (FDD) designs, develops & implements pre-service & in-service foreign language teacher education and leadership development programs for DLIFLC & Command Language Program (CLP) requirements. It provides professional development opportunities to faculty and leadership through in-house workshops and courses and by inviting presenters from other academic institutions as part of the Visiting Scholar Program.

The Curriculum Development Division (CDD) is in charge of the development and distribution of learning materials for the resident instruction Basic Programs, the post-basic programs, and special projects, including the Language Survival Kits and familiarization courseware in support of deploying troops. This division also develops courseware for online learning, including the Global Online Language Support System (GLOSS), which is distributed via the division’s www.lingnet.org site, a portal designed to aid resident students and alumni around the world with language materials. CDD is comprised of four main functional areas: The Aiso Library & Learning Center provides print and multi-media resources for the DLIFLC. It supports the faculty, students, and staff in carrying out their mission to provide foreign language training to the military community. It supports both the residential training programs and the distance education programs of the DLIFLC. The library collection comprises approximately 115,000 items containing 39 separate foreign language collections. In addition to books there are video recordings, newspapers, magazines, journals and computer software for circulation. The general collection concentrates on linguistics, langauge teaching and area studies. The Library has computer workstations with access to the Internet, cable broadcasts, word processing and language software.

The Chamberlin Library is located at Ord Military Community. Chamberlin Library is the general library for the military community on the Monterey Peninsula, with strong collections in military history and world cultures. The collection consists of approximately 60,000 items. The Library is open to the general public.
