he DLIFLC has been at the forefront of the foreign language instruction field for over 60 years.
Teaching is learner-centered and proficiency-oriented, employing authentic speech and materials. The
DLIFLC continually reviews developments in the field of instructional methodology and incorporates into
its programs those features that are designed to produce the very best linguists for our country.
Teaching is accomplished within a framework that provides intensive practice and interaction in the
target language, as spoken by educated instructors of that language. The student starts with carefully
selected texts and structured exercises to practice listening and reading comprehension and speaking,
and then moves toward creative use of the language. Throughout the program, emphasis is placed on
communicative competence in real-life situations.
In addition to its basic, intermediate, and advanced programs, the DLIFLC offers a number of specialized
programs that provide training emphasis on the terminology and functional skills required for particular
duties. The four functional skills are listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
The American Council on Education (ACE) has evaluated the DLIFLC’s foreign language and testing
programs and has made detailed recommendations for college credits.
The DLIFLC is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) of the
Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). In addition, the Institute has Federal
degree-granting authority from the United States Congress to issue
Associate of Arts in Foreign Language degrees to qualified graduates of all basic programs.
