Defense Language Institute celebrates Language Day 2017

By Natela Cutter DLIFLC Public Affairs   MONTEREY, Calif. –  An estimated 5,000 people attended DLIFLC’s annual Language Day Open House event on Friday, May 12th, on the Presidio of Monterey. It was a fun-filled day with more than 40 cultural performances, dance, song, special presentations and classroom demonstrations. Students, from of all four branches of the services, along with instructors, prepare for months before the annual event that draws in thousands of high school students and educators from all over northern California and as far away as Brazil. “I look forward to this event every year and try to come back to participate in some of the workshops,” said Mirko Hall, professor of German Studies and Chair of Languages, Cultures and Literatures at Converse College, South Carolina. Hall graduated from the Modern Standard Arabic program in 1992. Adding to the excitement this year was the introduction of live streaming for the event, which enabled an additional 900 people to view the event. “We watched it from Spain – thanks for live-streaming it so we could see our son!” said one couple via DLIFLC’s Facebook page. According to YouTube analytics, viewers from 20 different countries saw the event live. The Commander of the Presidio of Monterey, Col. Lawrence Brown, used the occasion of Language Day and the open post to invite Vietnam veterans to recognize sacrifice for the nation. Sixty one veterans were presented the U.S. Army’s pin recognizing their service during the 1960s and 1970s. Language Day normally takes place on the second Friday in May each year. DoD News, Defense Media Activity WASHINGTON, Dec. 21, 2016 — A new display at the Pentagon honors military officers who serve as regionally focused experts in political-military operations with advanced language skills, cultural understanding and the ability to advise senior military and civilian strategic decision-makers in an era of persistent conflict. The Defense Language and National Security Education Office dedicated the Foreign Area Officer heritage display Dec. 12 at the apex between corridors 7 and 8 on the second floor of the Pentagon. Daniel P.C. Feehan, principal deputy assistant secretary of defense for readiness, performing the duties of the assistant secretary of defense for readiness, hosted the ceremony. Diana Banks, deputy assistant secretary of defense for force education and training — the Defense Department’s senior language authority, also spoke at the dedication. Ceremony Kicks Off Awards Program The ceremony commenced the annual awards program for foreign area officers to recognize the capabilities and accomplishments of current and former FAOs from all of the services. The display in the Pentagon is the first of its kind to recognize the contributions of FAOs to DoD and its allies and partners, officials said. “As you walk through the FAO heritage wall display, you will see the history of FAOs ensuring readiness within the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard,” Feehan said. “FAOs are prepared to apply their strategic focus and regional expertise to advise senior leaders and develop and coordinate security cooperation.” Almost 2,600 FAOs are on active duty in more than 140 countries, and their history extends to before World War II. Headstart2 is an introductory language course that uses video, 3D animation, and interactive activities to teach the sounds and script of a language, basic vocabulary, and grammar. The Military Task modules contain specific phrases you can memorize for a range of topics specific to the country.
