Faculty Development

Welcome to the Faculty Development Division of the Defense Language Institute.

The Mission of the Faculty Development Division (FD) is to train and support the multi-cultural resident and non-resident faculty by assessing professional development needs, adopting best practices, and designing and implementing an effective, customized Foreign Language Teacher Education program for DLIFLC and Command Language Program requirements.

We accomplish this mission by offering a wide range of courses in various formats, all tailored to the specific needs of various populations of DLIFLC's faculty.

Topic areas include: the latest research in Second Language Acquisition, Best Practices in Foreign Language Teaching, Educational Technology, Academic Leadership, Team Development, and English for Specific Purposes.

Courses are taught by highly trained faculty, from within DLI as well as experts from the North American foreign language teaching and teacher education community.

FD is utilizing the latest in instructional technology to supplement, enhance, and deliver training to the DLI faculty, both resident and non-resident. Face-to-face workshops are conducted primarily at FD’s training site in Seaside, Calif., at the Presidio of Monterey, and on location at DLI’s many Language Training Detachments. Training is also conducted for Command Language Programs and other organizations under the DoD umbrella.
