Servicemembers of the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center and Presidio of Monterey marked the 8th anniversary of the Sept. 11th attacks on Friday.
The Hon. James R. Clapper, under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence, was guest speaker at the Patriot’s Day event, which took place on the Presidio’s Soldier Field overlooking Monterey Bay.
“I'm very honored and humbled to be here and to participate in this so most appropriate ceremony. All of us remember where we were and what we were doing on that day eight years ago. We will all carry the memory for the rest of our lives as individuals and as a nation,” said Clapper.
Also present at the ceremony from Office of the Under Secretary of Defense were Kristi Waschull, Stan Sims, and Hannah Powel, as well as DLIFLC and POM’s leadership, DLIFLC Commandant Col. Sue Ann Sandusky and Garrison Commander Col. Darcy Brewer.
“I think this Institution, the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center … is a unique environment that exists only here where culture and language education creates awareness sensitivity and tolerance for others' beliefs and way of life,” said Clapper.
“The unique education here promotes understanding and cooperation between the United States of America and nations and cultures around the world and inspires us,” he said.
Aside from visiting classrooms at DLIFLC and participating in the DLIFLC and POM Patriot’s Day, Clapper was guest speaker at the annual Air Force ball on Sept. 12.
