The Presidio held an event showcasing the ground breaking of a general instruction building here March 10.
Mrs. Gail McGinn, the Deputy Under Secretary of Defense (Plans), in her opening remarks at the ceremony, stated that the opening of a new general instruction building at DLIFLC is an important addition to the Department of Defenses' capability to train its members in foreign languages vital to our national security.
Given current global engagements by our Armed Forces, language skills enhance broader operational and strategic capabilities - just as important as weapon training - on the battlefield and across the entire array of DoD missions.
"This new GIB, along with the Alfie Khahil building that is nearing completion and the projected FY 11 GIB, demonstrate Congress' and the Department of Defense's tremendous commitment to excellence in language training,” said COL Sue Ann Sandusky, Commandant of the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center.
“Clearly, Ms. McGinn, the DoD Senior Language Authority, Congressman Sam Farr, and other local representatives in Congress have been phenomenal in recognizing DLI's unique contributions to our national security efforts as we move forward with these new GIBs."
The addition of the new facility will directly support the efforts of the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center to increase its language instruction capability.
The construction of the 47,000 square-foot instructional building, which will hold 36 classrooms, will provide a state-of-the-art learning atmosphere for service members to learn foreign language and culture.
Additionally, the facility will have numerous academic support areas, such as faculty offices, a conference room, test-control areas, multi-purpose training areas and cultural rooms.
Construction on the GIB will begin March 22 and is scheduled for completion in November 2011. The cost is projected at $13,416,600 for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver-level building.
The building is the second of three general instruction buildings that will be erected on the Presidio of Monterey over the next four years. The third building is planned to begin construction in fiscal year 2011 with a completion expected in 2012.
In closing, Mrs. McGinn said, "DLI is a national treasure...and is the keystone of our effort to give our operating forces...the ability to operate with our allies and partners in times of war and peace, whether in operational or humanitarian missions."
