DLIFLC dedicates new language building

The Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center dedicated a new instructional building in memory of Alfie Khalil, who worked at the Institute for 27 years, 17 of which were spent as union leader.

A bronze plaque was  unveiled and a ribbon-cutting ceremony was performed by DLIFLC Commandant Col. Danial D. Pick, Alfie’s brother, Hany Khalil, and Congressman Sam Farr. The event drew more than 100 faculty, staff, Khalil family members, local politicians, and guests.

“I am deeply humbled to be present at this ribbon cutting,” said Hany Khalil. “I would like to convey my joy and gratitude that you named this building after my brother.” To hear Mr. Khalil's impressions of the new building, please click here.

“This is a very exciting day for me because it is a wonderful building about languages and think it is the future of the world… but more importantly because it is being named after a good friend – Alfie Khalil. He was almost bigger than life…. He was the face of DLI,”  said Congressman Farr. To hear more from Congressman Sam Farr please click here.

Members of the Khalil family traveled from Egypt to participate in the event, despite recent unrest in the country. Alfie Khalil died on Nov. 18, 2006.

DLIFLC Commandant Col. Danial D. Pick described, for our camera, what happened after the ribbon cutting. To watch it please click here.
