Abstract

This article showcases how teachers can use Generative AI (GenAI) to create comprehension questions that determine if students understand the meaning of what is being taught. The author defines concept checking questions (CCQs) as questions used to confirm that students fully understand the meaning of a vocabulary or grammar being taught, and then provides examples of how they can be used specifically for grammatical and lexicological content. Instruction checking questions (ICQs) ensure that students understand the directions for an activity. CCQs and ICQs can be more useful in checking student understanding vs. simply asking students questions such as "Did you understand?" Examples are given.
